Self Incarceration

LUAP transforms a former police station in Hampstead Heath into a powerful installation exploring the invisible prisons we build within ourselves.

In November 2022, LUAP unveiled Self Incarceration, an immersive installation set within the cells of a decommissioned police station in Hampstead Heath. The work delves into the concept of "human caged potential," illustrating how individuals can become trapped by their own emotions and past traumas, even when the path to freedom lies open before them.

The installation features LUAP's iconic Pink Bear, a figure born from the artist's experiences with cognitive-behavioral therapy. Initially representing feelings of isolation and entrapment, the Bear evolves alongside LUAP's personal growth, symbolizing strength, resilience, and the journey toward self-improvement.

Visitors to Self Incarceration navigate through spaces filled with symbolic elements, including 200 meters of barbed wire, representing the emotional barriers that confine us. The installation challenges viewers to confront their own internal limitations and consider the ways in which they might unlock their true potential.

Self Incarceration was open to the public from November 24 to 27, 2022, at Kopple Cells, 56 Downshire Hill, London NW3 1PA
